Igatpuri in the monsoon felt like driving through clouds

I had seen photographs of Igatpuri during the monsoon before planning my trip, but I wasn’t prepared for how different it would feel in person. The hills looked greener, the roads were wet, and clouds seemed to sit so low that I sometimes felt as if I was driving straight through them.

I had planned the trip as a short escape from the usual city routine. I wasn’t expecting anything complicated. A drive through the hills, some good food, a quiet place to stay and a little time away from busy roads were all I wanted. The monsoon had other plans.

My Igatpuri drive changed as soon as the hills appeared

The journey to Igatpuri was fairly ordinary at first. There was traffic, the usual roadside stops and plenty of vehicles heading in the same direction. However, as the road climbed towards the hills, the surroundings slowly began to change.

The air felt cooler. Trees looked freshly washed by the rain, and small waterfalls appeared beside the road. The sky was covered with thick grey clouds, and visibility kept changing as patches of mist moved across the hills.

At one point, I could barely see the road ahead for a few seconds. It felt less like a normal hill drive and more like driving through a cloud. I slowed down, partly because of the wet road and partly because I didn’t want to miss what was happening around me.

Monsoon made everything look different at Igatpuri

Igatpuri is beautiful year-round, but the monsoon gives the landscape a completely different character. The dry patches of land disappear under shades of green. Water runs down the rocky slopes, small streams appear beside roads, and the hills look much softer under the mist.

I stopped several times during the drive. Sometimes there was a waterfall I hadn’t noticed on the way earlier. At other times, the clouds cleared for a few minutes and revealed the hills before covering them again.

I started enjoying my Igatpuri journey more than the destination

Usually, when I travel, I focus on reaching the destination. I check the route, think about where to stop and keep an eye on the time. This time was different. The road itself became one of the main reasons I enjoyed the trip. I found myself slowing down whenever the mist became thicker. 

The sound of rain against the car windows, the smell of wet earth and the sight of water running down the hills made the drive surprisingly relaxing. There was something comforting about not knowing exactly what the next turn would reveal.

The hills at Igatpuri were at their greenest

Once I reached Igatpuri, I understood why the monsoon is such a popular time to visit. The surrounding hills were covered in greenery, and the air felt fresh after the rain. Even ordinary roads looked scenic because of the mist hanging between the trees.

I spent some time exploring the area without trying to cover too many places. That turned out to be a good decision.

Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, I stopped whenever the weather looked interesting. Sometimes that meant standing beside the road for a few minutes. Sometimes it meant finding a small place to have tea and watching the rain outside.

Finding a comfortable Igatpuri stay made a difference

The weather can change quickly in Igatpuri during the monsoon, so having a comfortable place to return to makes the trip much easier.

There are several hotels in Igatpuri that work well for travellers looking for a peaceful stay surrounded by the hills. I preferred having a place where I could return after a wet drive, dry off, have something warm to eat, and simply watch the rain from indoors.

A good stay also gives you the freedom to wait out a heavy shower instead of feeling that you have to continue sightseeing. For a monsoon trip, I think that matters more than having a packed itinerary.

Even Igatpuri tea tasted better in the rain

One of my favourite memories from the trip was surprisingly simple. I was sitting with a hot cup of tea while rain fell outside. Mist had covered much of the landscape, and now and then I could see a little more of the hills before the clouds closed in again.

There was no sightseeing involved. No photographs to take. Just tea, rain, and a view. Those quiet moments ended up being more memorable than some of the places I had originally planned to visit.

A few things I would keep in mind while visiting Igatpuri

If you are planning a monsoon drive to Igatpuri, give yourself extra time. Roads can be wet, visibility can drop quickly, and you will probably want to stop more often than expected.

I would also keep a light jacket, an umbrella, and an extra pair of clothes in the car. Comfortable footwear helps too, especially if you plan to walk around after the rain. Most importantly, don’t try to rush through the trip. The weather is part of the experience.

Final thoughts

Before visiting Igatpuri, I thought I was going there for the hills. After the trip, I realised I enjoyed the journey just as much.

The rain changed the landscape every few minutes. Clouds moved across the roads, waterfalls appeared on the hillsides, and everything seemed quieter under the grey sky.
